WHY DENMARK LOVES TO STAY PLAYING

Victor Borge

If there was anyone who embodied the Danes' love of play it was Victor Borge. Nicknamed "The  Clown Prince of Denmark", his signature combination of music, word play and physical humour made him a star in America, and everywhere else come to think of it.

He worked alongside Frank Sinatra, and had the longest running one-man show in the history of theater with his 849 performances of Comedy in Music.

Most people had never seen a Danish comic before, but for us, it was natural. We think there's no better way of learning than when you're having fun.

Lego

Many people were surprised when Lego replaced Ferrari to become the world's most powerful brand. "How could these tiny bricks be more valuable than a Ferrari?" they asked. For us it was simple: it's all about making play available to everyone.

The company's name is derived from the Danish phrase
"Leg godt" which means "play well". It's why Lego is used in schools, why they sent boxes of bricks to astronauts in space in 2011 and why engineers the world over have pondered how many Lego bricks stacked on top of each other would it take to destroy the bottom brick. In case you re wondering, 375,000 bricks is the magic number.

Wind Turbines

We take wind power very seriously in Denmark. So much so we rely more on it for power than anywhere else in the wold. Perhaps it's the playfulness of the blades with the wind that attract us to it.

By 2020, 50% of our electricity production will come from wind, and on some days we produce more than the country needs so we sell it to our neighbours.

Our turbine making companies are among the largest in the world, and despite only being a small country, we're a big name across the world when it comes to harnessing the wind.

HOW WE USE PLAY IN OUR WORK

Creating equipment to study behaviour is like a game of chess, you only get better the more you play. We’ve been playing this game for more than 30 years at Ellegaard Systems and now at MBRose. Instead of rooks and pawns, our game's key characters are software engineers, micro computing, RFID tags, servers and sensors.

Our opponent is the tricky challenge of bringing animals together in one cage, and keeping them happy. It's a tough challenge, but we always treat it like a game: and the best games are ones that focus on fun.

So we dropped them all into a virtual bowl - like our logo - which allow’s us to approach the same problem from different angles at the same time. We find it works pretty well.

HM-2 - FOOD & WATER ACTIVITY MONITOR SYSTEM

Creating a seamless experience for both researcher and the researched

Nothing exemplifies our view more than the HM-2. It's the only commercial online food and water intake and activity monitor that can continuously monitor a group of rodents across both food and drink.

Using RFID, each individual rodent has its own unique identification meaning the acquired data is captured without the need to inhibit an animal's natural activity: play.

Each HM-2 station is designed for high standards of hygiene, feeding, water filling, cleaning and controlling spillage.

The HM-2 system uses standard polycarbonate cages and everything in contact with animals are made of polycarbonate or stainless steel, easily detachable, no tools needed, all machine washable.

Each station is connected to a standard Windows PC via network cable, and as many as 32 HM-2 stations can be managed by one computer.

Customizable to you, and your subjects

The HM-2 is designed to adapt to both your needs and your subjects. We have a sophisticated system that records events with a time stamp - to the millisecond we're proud to say - capturing everything from the start of the meal, the amount of food eaten, when liquids are consumed, for how long and when the subject stopped.

There are a range of configurations allowing you to tweak settings for the experiment, study and session ahead of time, and the system monitor built into the HM-2 can operate continuously (24/7) with a session pause mode to enable time for service to
change cage or bedding and to refill the feed hopper and water bottle.

Software designed for you

We created our own custom software to accompany the HM-2. The central hub for running experiments is the HM02Lab application, which can be run on any Windows PC.

The software ensures all the data is stored robustly in the HMBase SQL database, which our office application HMView then presents in an easy five-step process that allows researchers to process the data in graph formats, right from their desks.

From there it can easily be exported to visualization software such as Graph Pad Prims, SigmaPlot or Excel. Simple, efficient, effective.

We're practical as we know you like to be

Like the LEGO that is made in our home country, we believe that to build something, you only need the exact amount of bricks to do it. We don‘t over design our products and we don't fill our software with features that no-one needs.

It's why we've created a modular approach to both our hardware and software. Things can be as simple, or as technical as you like.

Our custom client server solution

We understand that an experiment is so much more than just the work in lab. Which is why we've created a server solution that connects the animal facility, the office and the server room into one seamless ecosystem.

This means your team don't need to be on site to get the job done. So Instead of having to go back and forth between the facility - and the hurdles you need to clear to gain access - researchers can design, change and tailor the experiments without disruption.

The researcher is then free to monitor the experiment from their office and explore the data in real time as it's synchronized to the corporate server.

The HM-2 as sophisticated
or as simple as you need it to be

We designed the HM-2 to be truly modular. At its most basic it has the HM-2 station, the WS-1 weight station and a computer with the HM software installed. Don't worry we handle software installation so as to avoid any mishaps.

If you need things to be a little more sophisticated, we can connect the HM-2 system to a database server allowing remote stakeholders to monitor and contribute to the experiment in real time.

Our system allows you to start with one or two HN-2 stations, which can be easily placed on a laboratory bench.

From there the system can scale as much or as little as is needed. If more than six stations are needed, we can provide a rack In 6, 8 or 9 station setups to help add capacity in a space efficient way.

OUR IP (YOUR IP!)

We love what we do, and we want to help share our findings with the world of behavioral research within rodents. We've invested in infrastructure that allows us to disseminate intellectual
property, freely and easily.

But we also take security seriously, which is why we use modular hardware and rock solid software for our data capture to ensure researchers can stay on top of the latest technology and keep their IP secure when they need it to be.

Animal welfare is key

Animals are at the heart of everything we do. which Is why we designed our software and systems in a way that ensures their welfare first.

The HM in our HM series means ’Herdsmen’. That was a deliberate choice as every good herdsmen takes care of his flock. He understands that their well-being is his well-being. We understand that too which is why all our cages are designed to encourage natural behaviour and to be as maintenance free as possible.

HM-2 FACTS
